Amelia Island – The Coolest Island on the Planet
Why is this Island cooler than all others?
Before we can give you our reasons we have to clarify our definition of an island.
- it can be connected to land by bridges or tunnels but it has to be surrounded by salt water. So yes Manhattan Island is an island
- It has to be inhabited and have an infrastructure that adequately supports its inhabitants in their needs. Mail arriving every 4 weeks by boat disqualifies. Dial up Internet access disqualifies.
- It should be no bigger than 300 square miles or 777 square kilometers, so that anyone living there can reach the ocean inside of 30 minutes.
Of course these criteria are voluntarily established and unfortunately exclude some of the major tourism destinations such as some of the Hawaiian Islands, Canary Islands and even Cuba, Trinidad and Puerto Rico, but let’s face it, an island that features Interstate Highways in their infrastructure is really a small country.
So if you want a list of islands that qualify size wise go to http://islands.unep.ch/Tiarea.htm
So…Is it really possible for one Island to be cooler than all others?
Yes it is.
We define cool as:
- laid back and small scale, yet with a lot of exciting opportunities
- having a lasting effect on health, wealth and happiness
- never having to say I’m bored
- setting the standards that all other islands aim to accomplish
Meeting the Criteria:
The above criteria must be met to challenge Amelia Island Florida as the Coolest Island on the Planet.
